LLEYTON Hewitt's rise to the Davis Cup captaincy is -imminent. The Herald Sun understands the former world No.1 will be formalised as -Australia's next cup captain within days. 
Former Wimbledon and US Open champion Hewitt, 34, is believed to have impressed when interviewed in Melbourne last week by a five-person selection panel.
If, as expected, Hewitt succeeds Wally Masur, he will become only the seventh man to captain Australia in 65 years.
He would follow Harry Hopman, Neale Fraser, John Newcombe, John Fitzgerald, Pat Rafter and Masur.
Australia this season produced its best finish since 2006, going down in the semi-finals to the Andy Murray-led Great Britain in Glasgow.
Australia is due to face arch-rival the US in Australia in the first round of next year's competition, from   March 4-6.leo.schlink@news.com.au
