Australian Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis will take the reins of the reborn Brisbane Bullets in the NBL next season, but his future as national team boss after the Rio Olympics remains uncertain.
The NBL announced Lemanis would spearhead the Bullets' return with the three-time NBL championship-winning coach to focus on the Boomers' hunt for Australia's first Olympic men's medal before moving to Brisbane.
Basketball Australia reviews its men's and women's coaching roles after each Olympics and while both roles are currently full-time positions, they haven't decided if that will remain the case post Rio.
The men's team position does appear likely to need a full-time coach with FIBA moving to a "FIFA World Cup-style" qualification system from 2017 with the Boomers and Emerging Boomers figuring in at least six tours in 2017-18 plus a handful of home qualifiers.
Lemanis said he wouldn't rule in or rule out putting his hand up to stay with the Boomers until after Rio and he would only continue in the role if he could do it to the best of his ability while also coaching the Bullets.
BA chief executive Anthony Moore said the board was already looking to what was needed in the future for the Boomers and would review the coaching position once the Rio campaign concluded.
Lemanis said he was honoured to be handed the Bullets' role and couldn't wait to return to the week-to-week battles of NBL coaching.
Lemanis' championship point guard during his time at New Zealand Breakers, CJ Bruton, will be his assistant coach and chief recruiter although Lemanis will also be working the phones.
"I'm still fully focused on the campaign for Rio and I'm fully committed to that," Lemanis said.
"There will be a recruiting period that happens but I can also recruit from Canberra and we have CJ in Brisbane.
"So I'm confident we will be able to assemble a good team while I can still focus on the Boomers' program."
