BRENTON Avdulla says the brilliant trial form of This Is Australia will hold up when the four-year-old steps out in the Pace Farm Maiden Handicap (1000m).
This Is Australia won on debut but was subsequently disqualified when a post-race swab showed the presence of a metabolite of the banned substance lignocaine.
That was in maiden company and the horse was subsequently comfortably beaten at stakes level before finishing last in the Brian Crowley Stakes.
Then trainer Clarry Conners turned This Is Australia out for a spell. He resumed for new trainer Gerald Ryan in a three-year-old maiden at Randwick in March and showed an improved performance finishing three lengths off Kind Heart over 1100m.
Ryan sent him back to the paddock and it'll be 214 days since he was last seen in a race when he jumps in the fifth event today.
The son of More Than Ready has won two trials leading into his return by a combined margin of 6¼ lengths and Avdulla says he gets his chance today to show the ability most know is there.
"He's felt enormous in both trials and in his latest one he won with ease," Avdulla said. "It looks a nice race for him and on ability he should be winning.
"Gerald's done a terrific job with him and the horse feels like he's strengthened up." Having run in two stakes race previously, Avdulla reckons This Is Australia could move on to bigger things after today.
"He's a fast horse and when he puts it all together he'll win a good race. Maybe it's just been immaturity but if he puts his best foot forward in this, I'm sure he can get the job done.
"That last trial, he was under a good hold and still pulling away from them."The final event sees the Gwenda Markwell-trained Brustar ready to hit his straps fourth-up.
