STAY With Me completed a rare double yesterday when she emulated the feat of her champion dam Miss Finland by taking out the Thousand Guineas.
After the impressive victory, co-trainer David Hayes declared her not only the best bred filly in the land but also the most talented.
But Hayes said Stay With Me would not follow the rest of Miss Finland's spring path of 2006 as he plans to give her just one more run for the spring.
Miss Finland finished an unlucky sixth in the Cox Plate following her Thousand Guineas but Hayes said Stay With Me would not be running in that race.
"I purposely took that temptation out of play by not even entering her," Hayes said.
Miss Finland won the VRC Oaks after that but Hayes said it was a longshot Stay With Me would contest that race.
"She'll have one more run. Whether it's the Myer Classic, the Mackinnon Stakes, the Wakeful Stakes or the Oaks I'm not sure. All I can say is that she'll be running at Flemington but my gut feel is that it will be a shorter race," Hayes said.
Hayes said Stay With Me defeated a far stronger field than Miss Finland's win. Stay With Me is the fourth foal of superstar Miss Finland, whose wins included the Golden Slipper and the VRC Oaks.
The victory gave Hayes and his training partner Tom Dabernig their fourth Group 1 win since they formed their training partnership just more than 14 months ago.
The success also gave Dwayne Dunn his 17th Group 1 of his career and Hayes was full of praise for his ride.
"I was critical of Dwayne two weeks ago but I can't speak highly enough of his ride today. It was a brilliant ride on a brilliant filly," Hayes said.
"He didn't give her the best ride last start but he's more than made up for it." Stay With Me missed the start and Hayes said Dunn had to go to plan B after that.
"I loved his poise after that. He just peeled off on the bend. Top marks to Dwayne Dunn," he said.
"She bombed the start but she settled well mid-race and got the run on the turn and sprinted away for an impressive win," Dunn said.
Stay With Me ($8) defeated Jameka ($8.50) by 1¾ lengths, with Badwiya ($5.50) 1¼ lengths away third.
The win capped a Group 1 double on the day after Criterion raced to victory in the Caulfield Stakes.South Australian-trained filly Miss Gunpowder finished down the track after being forced to cart the field up to a tearaway leader.
