I read with great interest and hope the article in Tuesday's paper regarding global poverty by Sebastien Malo.
It is really heartening to see that the number of people globally living in extreme poverty has fallen by 50 per cent in actual numbers since 1990, in spite of the population of the world rising. A truly remarkable result.
The World Bank attributed the continued fall in poverty to strong economic growth rates in emerging markets and investments in education, health, and social safety nets.
Many of the investments in education and health came about through funding and partnership with organisations like the Global Fund, Gavi (the Vaccine Alliance) and the Global Partnership for Education.
These are all organisations that are beneficiaries of Australian Aid. It would be a shame to see the progress reversed by the severe cuts to our aid budget. Aid works! We all benefit from a healthier world.
