A GOVERNMENT frontbencher has called for a complete overhaul of the way Australia tackles the ice epidemic, arguing for compulsory community-based rehabilitation for addicts and an end to harm--minimisation strategies. Alan Tudge, Assistant Minister to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, said Australia must aim to be drug-free. "Our objective should not be harm minimisation - to take drugs safely," Mr Tudge, said. "It should be to banish drugs from our society." Mr Tudge's comments are in stark contrast to the model now used, where courts issue cautions to drug users, and efforts are made to encourage drug-users to take drugs safely. He said Australia should adopt the model used in -Sweden, which required ice addicts to undergo rehabilitation, and urges people to never touch illicit drugs. "Sweden's vision for two decades has been to have a drug-free society, and they have backed up this vision with practical policies," Mr Tudge said.
"Despite being a very -liberal society, they have some of the lowest rates of drug use in the developed world. We must change attitudes to make drug-taking unacceptable. Two-thirds of people who take drugs for the first time do so because of peer pressure or desire to experiment. We can change these practices."HOW ICE CLAIMED MY BOY P36
