AUSTRALIA will draw out its intake of 12,000 Syrian refugees fleeing Islamic State butchers over two years to safeguard the nation from -potential terrorists sneaking in through the influx.
The government had originally planned for the entire intake to arrive by the end of the financial year but the Paris atrocity and Parramatta shooting have slowed the process.
ASIO and AFP officers want absolute certainty about the identities of all 12,000 before they will be granted a new home in Australia.
There are concerns extremists could mask themselves as refugees fleeing persecution to sneak into Australia. At least one of the terrorists involved in the Paris attacks was a refugee who had fled the Middle East into Europe.
Immigration Minister Peter Dutton yesterday confirmed it will take a couple of years to process the entire intake.
"I want to make sure checks are done to ensure we are not facing a threat from people who come in through the refugee program," Mr Dutton said.
Biometric testing will be used to help ascertain the -refugees are who they are claiming to be.Australia will fly the -refugees here and they will be billeted with church groups or provided government housing in Syrian communities within Australia.
