Key batsman
Mitchell Santner. The 23-year-old's left-arm finger-spin was speculated to be the key reason he was included for the final match of the Trans-Tasman Trophy series, but it was with the bat that he made the most impact. In the first innings Santner struck 31 from 46 deliveries. In the second he had to be more restrained. The left-hander moved to the cusp of a half-century on debut with a six off Nathan Lyon. That milestone sadly eluded him that over as he advanced to the off-spinner but badly lost his balance and was stumped. With no all-rounder in the Black Caps line-up, Santner's inclusion provided valuable batting depth, for a match in which it was badly needed.
Key bowler
Doug Bracewell. Australia will remember Bracewell as the bowler whose swing led the Black Caps to the series-levelling win in Hobart on their 2011-12 tour. Finishing the series-opening Test at the Gabba with 0-170 from 38 overs indicated he was far away from replicating that. The right-armer performed solidly in Perth, while in the first innings here his 3-18 off 12.1 overs was pivotal. Tim Southee and Trent Boult are all but assured of sharing the new ball but on Sunday he reiterated his ability to maintain pressure but also to move the ball through the air. His removal of David Warner was a huge fillip.
The numbers
7: Dismissals in the match from Peter Nevill in another classy wicketkeeping performance, which included his first stumping. He was one short of the Australian record at Adelaide Oval.
187: Target for Australia. Only 12 times previously have they failed to win when chasing 187 or fewer, most recently in 2004-05 in Mumbai, when they were 14 short of the target of 107.
Key moment
In the space of eight deliveries between the 10th and 12th overs Australian captain Steve Smith was thrice close to losing his wicket. The first came on one when an edge off Trent Boult went to wicketkeeper B.J. Watling only barely above the turf and was not held. The third came on eight when only his back leg in front of middle stump prevented him being bowled. The middle opportunity was dropped by Santner.
