SANDRA PISANI Born: 1956 Olympic gold medal Seoul 1988 Silver medal Champions Trophy 1987 World Cup bronze medal 1983 Eight South Australian A grade Premiership teams Twice South Australia's Best and Fairest Player.
Australian captain from 1985 to 1987SANDRA - or Sandy - Pisani is one of Australian hockey's original "Golden Girls".
In Seoul in 1988, Pisani was among the famed Hockeyroos who defied world renowned Dutch hockey masters to claim Australia's first Olympic gold medal in hockey - either in the men's or women's disciplines.
And, just as importantly, perhaps more, Pisani and her Hockeyroos comrades redefined women's hockey on the international scene proving the game could be just as exciting - and dramatic - as the men's game.
Pisani's playing career is only part of her distinguished record in Australian sport.
From the Burnside Hockey Club, Pisani - with her feisty and determined approach - rose to the national team in 1981 - at the World cup in Buenos Aires - when aged 22.
She played 85 internationals including three World Cups (1981, 1983 and 1986) and two Olympics (1984 and 1988) 85 internationals and was Australian captain in 1985, 1986 and 1987.
At club level, Pisani won eight SA State league titles and was best-and-fairest at Burnside twice (1985 and 1987).
At State level, Pisani represented South Australia in various forms of interstate hockey from 1978-1983, 1985-1989 and in 1992.
She continued her contribution to the State as a coach, selector and team manager. Pisani also served on the SA Hockey Board in the 1990s.
At international level, Pisani not only defined the Hockeyroos on the field but served as a national selector from 1993-2000 as the new era of Australian rule on the world stage unfolded under the coaching masterstrokes of Ric Charlesworth.
More recently, Pisani has continued her work with the Hockeyroos as a team manager of Australian development teams.Pisani has devoted herself to her sport for the joy of success, making her reluctant to bask in personal glory - such as the Order of Australia Medal in 1989 for services to hockey and life membership to her club, state and nation.
