ROBERT NEWBERY Born: 1979 Gold medal 2003 world championships Silver medal 1998 Commonwealth Games Bronze medals 2000 Sydney Olympics, 2004 Athens Olympics
ROBERT Newbery is Australia's most decorated male diver and one who broke new ground in his 11 years of representing Australia.
He teamed with Dean Pullar to win the bronze medal in the synchronised springboard before a raucous home crowd at the Sydney Olympics, for the first medal in diving by Australian men since Richmond Eve's gold medal in the plain high diving at Paris Olympics in 1924.
But Newbery didn't stop there. He won the bronze medal in both of the synchronised events at Athens in 2004 - the springboard (with Steve Barnett) and the platform (with Matthew Helm) - after having won the gold medal in the platform at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona.
This adds to a silver and a bronze medal in the 10m platform and 1m springboard at the Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games.
Newbery was also the first diver in the world to complete a 4.5 somersault on the 3m and 10m boards, and performed the highest degree of difficulty list of dives by any diver in the world.
Newbery first began diving at a neighbour's pool in Adelaide where his natural ability was spotted immediately.
He also taught himself to do somersaults on the family's backyard trampoline . Newbery and his former wife, Chantelle, made history when they competed together as the first husband and wife combination to represent Australia in their sport.Newbery graduated from medicine at the University of Queensland and now works as a doctor.
