FORMER Southern Stars captain Karen Rolton is one of Australia's most decorated and successful international women's cricketers across the game's three formats.
She is a record-breaker, World Cup winner and inspirational leader whose achievements helped paved the way for today's growing profile of women's cricket in Australia.
In 2006 her success was recognised when she was named the inaugural ICC Female Player of the Year at the ruling body's awards ceremony.
As a Test player, the fluent left-hander was a key member of the national side for 14 years, serving as vice-captain for nine years and then captain following the retirement of Belinda Clark.
In 14 Tests for her country, Rolton averaged an impressive 55.66 until her international retirement in 2009, which included two centuries and five 50s. Her highest score of 209 not out at Headingly in 2001 was just the third double-century in women's Test cricket, and set a new record that bettered the 204 scored by teammate Michelle Goszko in the same year, and New Zealand's Kirsty Flavell in 1996.
Today, Rolton's knock remains the third-highest score by any Test women's batter.
Rolton was also a handy left-arm change bowler whose medium pace netted 14 wickets at 23.3 - at the super-economical rate of just 1.8 runs an over.
In the one-day arena, her record is arguably even more impressive. Rolton is the only player to have passed 150 twice, her 4814 career runs sits fourth in the world and her eight centuries has only recently been beaten .
Her ton in the final of the 2005 World Cup that earnt her player of the match honours was crucial in steering Australia to glory.
Amazingly, Rolton averaged better than 50 in Twenty20 Internationals, at a strike rate of 126.
Her unbeaten 96 on debut in 2005 came from just 53 deliveries. Despite her international departure in 2009, Rolton continued to represent South Australia's Scorpions until the end of the 2010/11 season. Her 3674 career runs in the Women's Cricket League remains second only to Clark, while her average of 61.23 and 11 centuries is unrivalled.
