PANORAMA cricketer Matthew McCleary puts his stunning batting form down to a carefree attitude, several dropped catches and a chunky willow.
McCleary, of Westbourne Park, had the highest 2015/16 average in Australia - a whopping 488 - until November 14.
The opening batsman started the season in Adelaide Turf's limited overs division five with 99, 206 not out and 183 not out.
"I looked up the top 10 averages and there I was," McCleary, 41, says. "I'm proud enough to say I took a photo of it on my phone.
"I just go out there, have fun and don't really worry too much. "The fact a couple of teams can't catch always helps. But I did hit the ball pretty hard at them." McCleary's stay at the top was short-lived. A week later, his average dropped to 254 - the country's 16th best - after being trapped LBW for 20 against Payneham.
"I probably got ahead of myself to tell you the truth.
"Don't worry, my teammates let me know about it - chocolate to boiled lollies type scenario." McCleary uses a 1.1kg Kookaburra bat given to him by former Prospect all-rounder Ross Whiteley, now a member of the England second XI.
"It's an absolute belter of a bat." Originally from Mildura, McCleary once played lower grade cricket for West Torrens. He joined Panorama about a decade ago.
After scoring 822 runs at 102.75 for the Rams during the 2012/13 season, the father of two was invited to test himself at Grade club Prospect. He made 197 runs at 17.9 over the past two summers.
