Employability Award
The University of Wollongong
The university was rewarded for its strategy to help students gain the right skills to find jobs. It particularly focuses on those who face higher barriers to employment, including international students, low socioeconomic status students, disabled students, Indigenous students and those from rural areas.
It is a long-term strategy and has led to strong employment outcomes for graduates, despite high youth unemployment rates in the region. Originally the effort to improve employability occurred outside of the formal curriculum but has since been integrated leading to a formally-endorsed Student Career Development and Employability strategy with a suite of credit bearing subjects.
"Embedding employability practices into the curriculum enables students to gain credit, minimises risk, and enhances the quality-assurance process," the university said.
The judges said: "The University of Wollongong's employability strategy has impressive integration . . . reflecting a real commitment to improving the employment prospects of their students. They have provided compelling evidence of high value for investment and, most importantly, clear positive impact on employment outcomes."
