Two Australians killed in NZ helicopter crash New Zealand police believe two Australian and four British tourists were killed, along with the pilot, when a helicopter crashed on Fox Glacier on the west coast of South Island.
Tasman Police say that formal identification will take some time and that New Zealand authorities are liaising with both the Australian and British embassies.
Emergency services said weather conditions were too bad for crews to reach the scene to recover the bodies.
Inspector John Canning said the helicopter was in a crevasse 750 metres up the valley. Debris was scatted hundreds of metres around the crash site.
Inspector Canning said the recovery would be very difficult in the dangerous terrain.
"I'm not going to risk any more lives, we've lost seven," he said.
Officers were trying to locate crash victims' next of kin.
Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop said she had spoken to the families of the two Australians believed to be on board.
"My sympathies are with the families of the crash victims at this very distressing time," she said. "I am advised that the location and weather conditions at the crash site are difficult and full details of the crash are yet to emerge.
"My department will remain in close contact with the New Zealand authorities as they respond to the crash and we will provide support to any affected families."
