PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull says the attack on Paris "does look like a war" as he left the door open to Australia taking further action against terrorist group Islamic State.
Meeting with global leaders in Turkey, Mr Turnbull said there needed to be a "political solution" to the crisis in Syria and Iraq which had allowed Islamic State to grow into a global menace.
"Australia is making a very significant contribution ... and will consider what future contributions and what the shape of it will be in the light of those discussions," he said.
French President Francois Hollande described the attacks on Paris as an "act of war" and said the French response would be "merciless".
"It's guns and bombs, yes, it looks, it does look like a war," Mr Turnbull said in response.
He left the door open to Australians potentially acting as peacekeepers in Syria but said peacekeepers, or soldiers, would be more likely to be accepted by the Syrian people if they came from countries in the region.
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten gave firm bipartisan support to the Government's counter-terrorism efforts, which have included the introduction of six tranches of legislation targeted at jihadis.
"I am a strong supporter of the extra laws and resources we've given our domestic law enforcement and security agencies and I am a strong supporter of the allied air effort ... to destroy ISIS in northern Iraq and in parts of Syria." Australia has soldiers in Iraq training and advising Iraqi security forces, and Australian war planes are bombing Islamic State targets in Iraq and Syria. Former soldier and Abbott loyalist, backbencher Andrew Nikolic, the member for Bass, called on Mr Turnbull to overturn his decision to downgrade Immigration Minister Peter Dutton's role on the National Security Committee to part-time, tweeting: "one of the things to do quickly is permanently appoint Peter Dutton to the NSC" .NSW Government MP Andrew Fraser called on Mr Turnbull to "close our borders", saying Australia "does not need Middle Eastern refugees or Islamic boat people".
