HIT MEN STAY ON TARGET
USMAN Khawaja and Joe Burns were brilliant at the top of Australia's order at the Gabba in Brisbane.
Their next challenge is to reset and start from scratch at the WACA in Perth. Khawaja is ready for this second opportunity in the Australian side and now he's grabbed it.
Not only did they score many runs at the top of the order, it was the way they played that was so impressive. They showed great intent and strode out to the middle confident they could take on New Zealand's bowlers.
Now the key for them is to do nothing different.
They must come out for the rest of the summer playing with that same confidence and freedom.
Khawaja and Burns have had so much success at the Gabba that playing in Perth should not be too different.
The WACA will be a pretty good wicket to bat on once they get in and the outfield is always fast.
It is make or break for New Zealand, in conditions they aren't accustomed to, in the same way we often struggle in New Zealand, India or playing in England.
The wickets here have a bit of extra pace and bounce and while other teams find it hard to bat when they come to Australia, we thrive on it.
The great strength of the Australian batting in Brisbane was shot selection. Khawaja and Burns, in particular, were patient when they needed to be and let the ball go well but they are still entertaining cricketers and try to take the game forward. That style is why I've always enjoyed watching Khawaja bat.
Ever since I saw him come through for NSW he has had all the shots in his repertoire and it was obvious how gifted a player he was against the quicks and spinners.
He has a beautiful technique and I love seeing him play that aggressive brand of cricket where he puts pressure back on the bowlers.
Ever since Burns came into the Test side last summer, he has made the most of every opportunity he has been given.
He played exceptionally well in both innings and showed how important the opening partnership is in setting the foundation that allows the middle order to play their natural game.
