Key batsman
Usman Khawaja
Having already posted an unbeaten breakthrough century on Thursday, Usman Khawaja had to begin afresh on Friday. That's not always easy, and the Black Caps' bowlers did improve after a nightmare opening day. The absence of injured seamer Tim Southee helped the Australians, and the slick Khawaja motored along, eventually completing the sixth-highest Test score by a No.3 batsman at the Gabba.
Key bowler
Mitchell Johnson
There was little to say about the New Zealand attack but, for the Australians, pacemen Mitch Johnson, Mitch Starc and Josh Hazlewood all had their moments. Ross Taylor was particularly uncomfortable and it was no surprise he edged a Johnson thunderbolt. Johnson also induced Brendon McCullum, keen to attack, into a healthy edge.
Key numbers

The moment
Australian skipper Steve Smith surprised some when he declared not long after lunch when Khawaja was dismissed. There was a feeling he would have waited until tea, or at least until there was more cloud cover. It was tough going early for the Australians but that changed when Tom Latham was caught at point off Starc. The Caps then lost 4-16.
