The ever-increasing quality of the TV series work by prolific creative duo Wayne Hope and Robyn Butler (Upper Middle Bogan, The Librarians, Very Small Business) indicated their feature-film debut would be well worth checking out. Sadly, it isn't. The laughs just are too few and far between in this feeble farce about an Australian family whose life implodes when paid a visit by a young celebrity relative (Lucy Fry) who has hit the big time in the US. Butler's screenplay has some right-on things to say on occasion, but most of 'em are drowned out by Fry's incredibly annoying character, and the underwhelming overacting of Portia de Rossi as her pill-popping mother. Hamish Blake scores best in the co-star ranks, nailing the crowd-pleasing connection everyone else involved appears to have missed. One of the genuine disappointments of 2015. êê
