It's as inherent a British tradition as the monarchy, Morris dancing and cucumber sandwiches: and it's coming Down Under. Melbourne will host the exclusive Australian season of the BBC Proms classical concert series in April. The world's largest classical music festival, the much-loved Proms is an eight-week season of concerts performed in and around London's Royal Albert Hall every English summer for the past 120 years. In Melbourne this will be condensed to five Proms from April 13 to 16. Sir Andrew Davis, chief conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, is an old hand at the Proms, having led the BBC Symphony Orchestra as chief conductor for 11 years. Davis, pictured striding onto the BBC Proms stage, will join the Queensland Symphony Orchestra's new music director, Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra, along with musicians from the MSO and QSO, performing with soloists for BBC Proms Australia. Tickets go on sale from November 16. theage.com.au - Read more
