Reclaim Australia plans 'one hell of a rally' in Canberra By Michael Inman Promoter Shermon Burgess.
A controversial anti-Islam group has announced plans to hold a rally at Parliament House next month.
Shermon Burgess, a high-profile member of both Reclaim Australia and the United Patriots Front, posted two videos to social media on Wednesday to advertise the demonstration at 1pm on November 22.
In the posts, Mr Burgess claims the rally will be held under the banner of Reclaim Australia, a controversial organisation for which he had been spokesman until recently.
A Facebook page promoting the event was created at the weekend and has attracted several likes.
If the rally goes ahead, it would coincide with other planned Reclaim Australia demonstrations around the country. But the group could have competition. The Canberra Anti- Racism Network is planning a counter-protest at Parliament House at noon on the same day.
A Facebook page, spruiking that event, urged Canberra to join its rally "to show that the voices against bigotry and racism are louder than Reclaim Australia's will ever be". The page indicated that about 90 people had declared an intention to attend, and that a further 48 were interested.
In the past, there have been clashes between rival rallies, including scuffles during protests in Melbourne in July.
News of the planned Reclaim Australia protest attracted several likes and comments in support, but one poster urged protesters to "make sure you are on your best behaviour at that location".
"I'm sure I don't need to tell you but being it is the location you have chosen there will be aaaalot of media and chance for interviews so bring you A game!" the post said.
Mr Burgess - the former leader of the United Patriots Front - took to his Facebook page, "The Great Aussie Patriot", to announce the plans under the title: "Canberra is Locked in and Ready to GO!!! Get your Aussie flags READY".
In the first video, Mr Burgess uses an Australian flag as a backdrop and is wearing flag-emblazoned clothing.
"It's going to be one hell of a rally, it's time to stand up against radical Islam and those treasonous p----- within our government who won't listen to us. Well, we're going to be right on your doorstep so you've got no choice now."
In a second video, he said, "It does not matter what your skin colour is, we all stand together, all races together, against Islamic extremism."
