More Fraser Coast earthquakes are possible after the area's 16th shock of the year struck off Fraser Island on Boxing Day.
The 3.7 magnitude quake hit roughly 100 kilometres off the sandy island about 6.40am but didn't have anywhere near the impact of the July tremors that kicked off a six-month-long earthquake cluster.
That earthquake on July 30, with a magnitude of 5.4, was felt as far south as northern New South Wales but Geosciences Australia said only one Fraser Island resident reported feeling Saturday's shaking.
Duty seismologist Marco Maldoni said July's more severe earthquakes had made the entire area more unstable and more likely to suffer further tremors.
He said he wasn't predicting further aftershocks but "wouldn't be surprised" if more hit in the coming days.
"You can never be 100 per cent sure but usually with earthquakes, what happens is you have an initial earthquake and then a series of smaller aftershocks," he said.
"That being the case, today we had a 3.7, we may well have tomorrow a bigger one ... but when you look at the statistical data, you usually have an initial earthquake and the activity tends to die off over the next days weeks and months."
