Bai's Australian Open spot in officials' hands Tennis Chris Dutton Alison Bai is unsure if she will ask for a discretionary wildcard.
Her immediate Australian Open hopes have been dashed, but Alison Bai will consider a bid for a discretionary wildcard after her grand slam hopes hit a major hurdle on Sunday.
Bai and partner James Frawley were beaten by Jess Moore and Brad Mousley in the mixed doubles final in Melbourne, missing out on a spot in the Australian Open next month.
Frawley could play doubles with hitting partner Nick Kyrgios, while Bai will take a break from tennis over Christmas to consider whether she will lobby for a wildcard entry.
Bai and Frawley had no chance against Moore and Mousley, going down 4-1, 4-0 in the fast-four format. "The format was frustrating because it all happens so quickly and we were indoors, it's so short and quick," Bai said.
"That's probably it for me in terms of the Australian Open. I'm not really sure, I just have to see how it goes.
"A discretionary wildcard is the only way now and I don't even know how that works."
World No.321 Bai missed her chance to have an impact in the singles event, winning the first set before going down 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 to Belinda Woolcock.
She played 42 matches on the ITF pro circuit this year as well as 39 in doubles events, but fell short of her rankings goal and her Australian Open aspirations.
"It is disappointing, you train all year and try to get to the Aussie Open - that was the goal," Bai said. "But I know it's sport and you can't win everything, I've just got to keep working at it and see where it goes."
Frawley, 21, has been part of the Kyrgios camp for the past 12 months and has been the world No.30's hitting partner.
The pair could team up in the Australian Open doubles event if they are accepted into the field for the first grand slam of the year from January 18-31.
Kyrgios is expected to return to Canberra this week after finishing his commitments with the Singapore Slammers in the International Premier Tennis League.
He is likely to play in the Hopman Cup in Perth before moving to Sydney and then the Australian Open.
