NAN AND A WHOLE LOT OF TROUBLE
(Australia, 11 minutes) Directed by Dena Curtis: Every family gets into a spot of trouble once in a while. Produced under the Exchange program of Screen Australia's Indigenous department, this comic drama sees Nan (Noeleen Shearer) and granddaughter Fuzzy (Amba-Rose Atkinson) facing off with Aunty Min (Pamela Young) after the passing of a close relative. While Nan chooses to preserve family memories with a treasured photo album of the dead, Aunty Min finds that more than a little morbid. A story about cultural taboos and the meaning of Indigenous tradition in well-groomed suburbia.
FLAT DADDY
(Australia, 15 minutes) Directed by Matt Holcomb: Eating dinner at the table with a life-size cut-out of your dad isn't exactly ordinary. But for Kate (Kat Stewart) and daughter Cindy (Sophia Tsoltoudis), it's their only way to fill the void while their absent father and husband Scott (Christian Clark) is on military duty. Based on an award-winning short story by Louise D'Arcy, Flat Daddy is a heartbreaking examination of the ups and downs of family in emotional upheaval. With a soaring orchestral score by Australian composer Guy Gross (The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert), it will catapult you on a journey of love and perseverance in the face of hardship.
WHOEVER'S BEEN USING THIS BED
(Australia, 21 minutes), Directed by Andrew Kotatko: It's 3am and a mysterious caller (Jane Birkin) unceremoniously wakes Ray (Jean-Marc Barr) and wife Iris (Radha Mitchell). When neither can fall back to sleep, they begin a meditation on each other's doubts and fears. In the haze of cigarette smoke and shadows emerges an honest portrait of marriage in the language shared between lovers. Based on a story by American writer Raymond Carver, director Andrew Kotatko's work recalls Robert Altman's interweaving ensemble film Short Cuts. With heartfelt performances from the star-studded cast, this short beautifully brings to life a story of tumultuous emotion.
BEYOND THE WATER'S EDGE
(Australia, 33 minutes) Directed by Scott Dale: In an action-packed thriller set in colonial times, escaped convict (John Jenkins) is pursued by guards through the unforgiving Australian bush. He manages to slip from their grasp but not before being stabbed through the leg by an Indigenous woman (Maurial Spearim). Forced to take her prisoner, the film follows their relationship. Wonderfully filmed in rugged seaside cliffs and forests, and with brilliant aerial shots, director Scott Dale looks at power and survival in the early years of British settlement.
