He didn't win the world championship he was desperate to achieve at the Pipe Masters in Hawaii, but Mick Fanning has drawn praise from throughout the sporting world for his courage.
Sports stars and media personalities expressed their support of Fanning following the loss. Fanning's brave tilt came after news of the death of his older brother, Peter, and many praised his determination to finish the competition.
Paralympian Kurt Fearnley tweeted: "I can't be the only fella watching the last hour feeling like ya choking back possible tears. Love ya work."
Former cricketer Adam Gilchrist congratulated Brazilian Adriano de Souza on his win but tweeted "you're my champion" to Fanning.
Retired NRL forward Reni Maitua used Twitter to express a similar sentiment: "Just come up short but still the world champ in my eyes @Mick_Fanning".
NSW premier Mike Baird added: "Gutsy effort, Mick Fanning. We're proud of you mate. #BillabongPipeMasters".
Even after he had been defeated by Fanning, surfing legend Kelly Slater had nothing but kind words for his friend. "Out in the water, I was just telling him to focus, good luck and have fun."
