Australian journalist Peter Greste found guilty by Cairo court CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 "Alongside demanding the release of our colleagues, Al Jazeera calls on every one to continue the fight for the freedom of speech, for the right of people to be informed and for the right of journalists around the world to be able to do their job." The verdict in the retrial was issued against Fahmy, a naturalised Canadian who has given up his Egyptian citizenship, Mohamed, an Egyptian, and Australian Greste, who was deported in February.
Greste said he had not spoken with his colleagues, as of 8pm on Saturday, but knew the men and their supporters would be feeling "angry, upset and devastated".
The journalists were arrested in Egypt in December 2013, while working for the Al Jazeera network.
They were charged with airing false news and aiding the Muslim Brotherhood, a banned organisation in Egypt.
They spent 400 days in jail. In January, 2015, their convictions were overturned, and, in February, Greste was deported to Australia.
Shortly afterward, however, a re-trial was ordered.
