IT'S the drug that could turn the battle against cancer on its head, it is Australian grown and it is being trialled on 22 people in Sydney and Melbourne.
University of NSW researchers have developed a treatment that shuts off a cancer cell's energy production, this stops the cells dividing and kills them.
And the beauty is it only works on cancer cells, leaving healthy cells alone, allowing patients to live a normal life.
University NSW Professor Philip Hogg has spent 10 years researching the ground-breaking new molecule that arose out of an observation that cancer cells metabolise glucose differently to normal cells.
The molecule has been found safe when used in animals and now it is being tested on 22 cancer patients. Researchers will know in the next six months whether the drug works on humans.
