WHEN it comes to meteoric rises in sport it's hard to beat the story of 16-year-old schoolgirl Haneen Zreika.
Amazingly the Strathfield South High School student had never played Aussie rules before AFL NSW/ACT staff came into her school and delivered a multicultural program a little over a year ago.
She picked up a Sherrin, fell in love with the game, and has been playing ever since.
Fast forward 14 months, and Haneen has represented NSW/ACT at the under-18 national championships and was last week selected in the All Australian Team at the School Girls Championships.
"I love everything about AFL," Haneen told The Saturday Telegraph. "I love the tackling, running, kicking and teamwork." Haneen was introduced to the game by one of her teachers, Nate Gray, who had seen her play rugby league and rated her one of the best in the country for her age."There were no opportunities for her in league, so I told the AFL coaches if you give her a chance you won't be disappointed," he said. "A year later, the proof is in the pudding - she is in the Australian team."
