The Australian shone at last night's prestigious Kennedy Awards for excellence in NSW journalism, with several journalists being recognised for their outstanding work over the past year. 
The Weekend Australian Magazine writer Greg Bearup and National Security Editor Paul Maley were awarded scoop of the year for discovering the photo of Sydney terrorist Khaled Sharrouf's young son holding up a severed head in Raqqa, Syria.
A team, including reporters Peter Lalor and Simon King and the online newsdesk, were recognised for outstanding online news breaking for their ongoing coverage of cricketer Phillip Hughes's death and funeral.
James Jeffrey won the Peter Ruehl Award for outstanding columnist for his Strewth column, a daily offering of witty comment on current political and social issues.
Illustrator Eric Lobbecke won the outstanding illustration award for his art on the Inquirer report "Three-year tour", about Tony Abbott's lost government on Gilligan's Island.ABC reporter Caro Meldrum of Four Corners took out the journalist of the year award.
