Australia has spoken. The thousands of Twitter and Instagram votes from my poll have been counted and correlated, and Australia's favourite chocolate dessert has been named!
There was no little support for warm chocolate tart (Marco Pierre White or Joel Robuchon-style), any chocolate biscuits, chocolate souffles, chocolate salted caramel slice, sacher torte, chocolate croissant bread-and-butter pudding, chocolate pots and even Raymond Blanc's chocolate delice.
Popular though these may have been, they couldn't crack our top 10. So here they are …
AUSTRALIA'S TOP 10 CHOCOLATE DISHES 10. Chocolate Ice Cream Described by many as the king of ice creams, it didn't matter whether it was full of nutty clusters, chocolate chips or seams of chocolate sauce, we love its cool, smooth, dark beauty.
9. Hot Chocolate There was much debate over whether hot chocolate could be classed as dessert, but we ruled it in given the number of decadent super rich hot chocolates out there - and heck, we see nothing wrong in having hot chocolate for dessert, especially if you've got some churros, frozen bananas or marshmallows to dunk in it.
8. Fudgy Chocolate Torte The growth in gluten-free eating definitely pushed the popularity of these dark, sticky pastry-less tarts that are rich with egg and chocolate and might use rice flour, potato starch or nut meals to add the bulk or stabilise the mix during the bake.
7. Chocolate CupCake So it seems that there are some people out there still in the grip of the cupcake mania of a decade ago - get over it people and get back to making … 6. Chocolate Cake Maybe it's nostalgia; maybe it's hipster CWA retro-ism, but either way, the chocolate cake is just nudging a top 5 position and really it has to be one of the classic uses for both chocolate and its derivatives such as cocoa powder. There are few things as satisfying as the sight of a chocolate cake standing proud among tea cups.
5. Mud Cake I might be the child of the '70s, but the sheer volume of chocolate in both the cake and the icing makes this internationally adopted son of the Mississippi Mud Cake a sure-fire international favourite.
4. Chocolate Brownies The mere mention of the word "brownie" was enough to elicit an almost religious fervour, whether Australia was talking about them warm from the pan or tricked up into a fancy dessert (pictured).
3. Chocolate Self-saucing Pudding When this CWA favourite comes out of the oven, it brings the same sort of sighs that are usually reserved for that moment when Brad Pitt takes his shirt off in Thelma and Louise. At least that is when you cook this combination of the most basic pantry ingredients following the four basic rules - flatten your batter before adding your sauce ingredients; pour on your water by pouring it on to the back of a wooden spoon; don't overcook the pudding; and, finally, leave the pudding to rest before serving.
2. Chocolate Mousse Once this '70s dinner party classic was served on its own with nothing more than a billowing shawl of cream, but now rather than set into a glass, it's more likely to be piped or quenelled on to a plate to add richness and creaminess to crumbs, nut granolas and random fruits or berries.
1. Chocolate Fondant It's got moist cakeyness, it's got oozing sauce, it's got theatre and it's as chocolatey as it comes - no wonder the fondant has been picked as Australia's favourite chocolate dessert. It's also got that wonderful molten centre.Think we've got it wrong? Share your views with me on twitter at @mattscravat.
